Klimabonus 2026

Klimabonus 2026: the complete solar guide for Luxembourg

Amounts, conditions, pre-financing, communal supplements and pitfalls to avoid — so you maximise your grant.

What is the 2026 Klimabonus?

The Klimabonus is the grant scheme run by the Luxembourg Ministry of the Economy to support household energy-efficiency and renewable-energy projects. For residential solar self-consumption, it can cover a substantial share of the investment — up to €10,000 for systems up to 15 kWp. The 2026 version introduces two major changes: mandatory pre-financing by the registered installer (you no longer pay the grant upfront), and a streamlined administrative process that cuts approval times from months to weeks.

Pre-financing: the 2026 change

Before 2026, you paid the full installation cost to your installer and waited 6 to 12 months for the State to reimburse the grant. From 2026 on, the registered installer deducts the Klimabonus directly from your invoice — you only pay the net out-of-pocket amount.

Before 2026

Gross invoice paid to the installer (~€13,000), file submitted to the Ministry, 6–12 month wait, grant paid back later. Significant cashflow burden.

From 2026

Net invoice presented by the installer (~€8,800), grant deducted at source, paperwork handled by the installer. No need to front €4,200 for a year.

Grant amounts in 2026

Klimabonus grants stack across installed technologies. Headline figures for residential projects:

TechnologyAmountCap / conditions
Solar self-consumption≈ €700/kWpUp to €10,000 — systems up to 15 kWp
Storage battery€2,250Flat amount, paired with eligible PV system
Heat pump (air/water)up to €8,000Based on energy performance (COP) and home type
EV charging pointup to €1,200Smart wallbox, single-family home
Reduced VAT at 3%−14 ptsInstead of 17%, baked into the turnkey invoice

Indicative amounts to confirm with the Ministry of the Economy. Exact entitlement depends on peak power, COP and technical compliance. Sources: Klima-Agence and Ministry of the Economy.

Are you eligible?

To qualify for the residential solar Klimabonus in 2026, your project must meet several conditions:

  • Home located in Luxembourg, used as primary or secondary residence
  • Installation carried out by an approved company listed in the Klimabonus installer registry of the Ministry of the Economy
  • Equipment meeting technical requirements (efficiency, CE marking, ≥10-year product warranty)
  • Grid-connection declaration filed with Creos before commissioning
  • System designed for self-consumption first (full grid-export projects are no longer subsidised for new installations)
  • Power cap at 15 kWp for the residential tariff; above that, the professional scheme applies

Step by step

With pre-financing, your role is limited to choosing the equipment and signing. The installer handles all admin in the background.

  1. 1

    Request quotes

Compare 3 quotes from approved installers. Each already shows the Klimabonus pre-deducted and the net out-of-pocket cost.

  2. 2

    Sign the quote

Confirm your chosen offer. The installer files the grant request with the Ministry for pre-approval.

  3. 3

    File pre-approval

The Ministry confirms eligibility within 2 to 4 weeks. No action needed from your side.

  4. 4

    Installation

Work completed in 1 to 3 days depending on size. Commissioning and Creos declaration by the installer.

  5. 5

    Net invoice presented

You receive the invoice with the Klimabonus already deducted. You pay only the net amount.

  6. 6

    Grant paid to the installer

The Ministry then transfers the grant directly to the installer. You never need to advance the money.

Communal supplements on top

Many Luxembourg communes add a local supplement to the national Klimabonus. Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange, Dudelange and Pétange are among the most active, with amounts ranging from €200 to over €1,000 depending on the project. These communal supplements stack with the Klimabonus and further reduce your net out-of-pocket cost. The application goes directly through your commune, usually after commissioning. Check your commune's website or citizen desk — most are not automated and require an active request from you.

Pitfalls to avoid

The most common mistakes that cost households all or part of the grant:

Picking a non-registered installer

Only companies listed in the Klimabonus registry can pre-finance the grant. A non-registered installer may quote an attractive price, but you lose eligibility — the net extra cost usually exceeds the headline saving.

Oversizing beyond 15 kWp

Above 15 kWp you fall into the professional scheme: lower grant cap, different tax treatment, heavier Creos paperwork. For most homes, 6 to 12 kWp is the sweet spot.

Skipping the Creos declaration before install

The installation must be declared to Creos BEFORE commissioning. Retroactive normalisation can block grant payment for months.

Confusing Klimabonus with communal supplement

These are two separate schemes. The Klimabonus is national and pre-financed; the communal supplement is local — you apply for it yourself after commissioning.

Trying to sell all production to the grid

Since 2024, the Klimabonus favours self-consumption. Full grid-export projects are no longer eligible. Plan to cover 60 to 80% of your consumption, with or without a battery.

Stacking with other grants and loans

The Klimabonus stacks with the reduced 3% VAT, with communal supplements, and with green loans offered by Luxembourg banks (notably BIL Climate, BGL BNP Paribas "Mon Toit Vert" and Spuerkees "Eco-Prêt"). Those loans typically cover up to 100% of the net cost over 5 to 15 years, at a rate 0.5 to 1 point below the standard mortgage rate. The Klimabonus does NOT stack with other national grant schemes for the same installation.

FAQ on the solar Klimabonus

How long until eligibility is confirmed?
With a registered installer, expect 2 to 4 weeks for Ministry pre-approval — fully handled by the installer.
What happens if I sell my home?
The Klimabonus is not refundable. A solar installation adds on average 4–6% to resale value, well above the initial net cost.
Is the Klimabonus taxable?
No. Klimabonus grants for a residential installation are not subject to income tax.
Can I claim the Klimabonus for an installation already in place?
No. Ministry pre-approval must be obtained BEFORE works start. An already-commissioned installation cannot be retroactively eligible.
What about apartments or tenants?
For co-owned buildings, the application goes through the syndic and a specific scheme applies. Tenants cannot claim directly, but can negotiate with the owner — who is eligible.
Is the 2026 Klimabonus guaranteed long-term?
The scheme is reviewed yearly by the Ministry. The 2026 pre-financing and caps are confirmed for the full year; the 2027 amounts will be published at year-end.
